As you all must have known by now that Fring for iPhone is in the AppStore and has reached the Top 5 Apps List. However, according to Apple's SDK rules, it allows VoIP calls only over WiFi networks. But a recent patch allows calls over EDGE/3G/WiFi.
To Install the patch, follow these steps:
1. Get the patch from link below the post
2. Install Fring from AppStore
3. Uninstall Fring from iPhone
4. Open the downloaded file on PC/Mac with iTunes
5. Sync your iPhone ! Voila, you're done !!

I just did the new itunes update before trying to apply the patch to Fring, and it says The Application Fring was not installed on the ipone as the software could not be verified.
What do I do now?

same issue here ... so what is the answer? My 3g iphone is jailbroken and the latest firmware.

Well, this happens because iTunes checks weather you have purchased Fring or not. So first you have to install fring from AppStore and then uninstall it and install the patched version.

Is this program for a stock 3G or a jailbroken device?

Thank you again for your understanding. Just for the record, my reading in multiple forums says this works only for iPhones which are jailbroken.
However, I would like to know if this PATCH works from someone who actually tried it on a stock iPhone 3G.

Well, there are 2 patches, one needs jailbreaking and has to be installed via SSH and the other one is the one that I have posted. Its an ipa iTunes file that does not need jailbreaking. However, the author of the post had a jailbroken phone, so it cant be verified.

unfortunately not being able to get patch to work on an factory (italian) unlocked jailbroken iph 3g, v 2.2
anyone tried this?
